Goodbye LIT Summer...Hello Youth Leadership Program!

The former Leader in Training program was an integral part of a summer at Canadian Adventure Camp.

It was a big moment for our 17-year-olds who had spent summer after summer at CAC as a camper. They were now taking the next step in their camp journey, spending 8 weeks developing leadership skills and learning what it meant to be a staff member at CAC.

A typical summer as an LIT involved a canoe trip around Lake Temagami, living in camper cabins as co-leader with counsellors and learning how to lead the many activities offered at Canadian Adventure Camp.

We have had many people complete the LIT program successfully over the years and who have gone on to work at CAC as counsellors, coaches and support staff. The former LIT summer had many fantastic elements to it but we wanted to make it even better!

What’s New?

Our New Youth Leadership Program has all the great things that were part of the former LIT program, plus more! The journey from camper to staff is now over a longer period of time, allowing for more focused leadership development at each stage.

Those taking the courses have the opportunity to choose which area(s) of camp they are most interested in and spend more time in those areas. The new program and its courses also allow more flexibility in terms of time commitment during the summer.

There are three stages to our newly developed Youth Leadership Program.

Leadership One

The journey starts for 16-year-old campers who can complete the Leadership One course. This stage of the program is probably the biggest change to the leadership program at CAC. But it is also a very exciting change!

Those taking the Leadership One course still have full camper status - they sleep in camper cabins with peers their age. They participate in regular camp activities and evening programming as usual (including social).

Similar to other specialties at CAC (e.g. waterski or gymnastics), campers completing the Leadership One course will spend part of their day doing the course and the rest of their day choosing other activities.

Leadership One is a two-week course (length of one session at camp) and we recommend it as an add on to your regular camp stay. However, if a camper is only able to attend camp for one session only, they are still welcome and encouraged to complete the Leadership One course.

For summer 2021, Leadership One will be running during sessions 2 & 3. By completing Leadership One, you will receive 20 hours towards High School Volunteer Hours.

The most important thing to know about the Leadership One course is that it is a prerequisite for Leadership Two course. If any 16-year-old camper has had an interest in doing the former LIT summer, they will need to complete the Leadership One course next summer.

Enrollment for Leadership One is now open!

Leadership Two

The second stage of the Youth Leadership Program is the Leadership Two course. This course is similar to the former LIT summer with some exciting changes.

Leadership Two is a four-week course and will run twice over the summer. For anyone taking the course in the first half of the summer, you are encouraged to extend your stay to further develop your skills.

Those taking the Leadership Two course will spend each day immersed in the course. They will initially sleep in Leadership Two cabins together before moving into camper cabins as a co-leader.

As part of the Leadership Two course, there are 5 activity area modules to choose from:

Waterski

The Big Top

The Arts

Sports

Outdoor Education

The course also includes a canoe trip around the beautiful Lake Temagami.

Applications for the Leadership Two course are open! Those eligible to complete the Leadership Two course have been sent an application form.

Junior Staff

The final stage of the Youth Leadership Program is our new Junior Staff positions. Upon completing Leadership Two, individuals are eligible to apply for a junior staff (junior counsellor or junior coach) position at CAC the following summer.

Junior staff are 18 years of age. Junior staff will be paid and fully aligned with staff but will now have the opportunity to continue to develop their leadership skills.

Our LITs from Summer 2020 are eligible to apply for Junior Staff positions for next Summer.

Summer Fun on Internet Island

When it was announced that overnight camps would not be running this summer, a wave of disappointment and sadness came over the CAC family and the whole camp community.

We count down months, weeks, days until we can get back to our favourite island but now we had to wait even longer.

While summer 2020 wasn’t going to be a normal summer, we knew that we had to come together as a family and stay connected.

We knew that we couldn’t wait another year until we did camp activities, had a campfire and made friendship bracelets again.

Canadian Adventure Camp is home to so many people during the summer months. While they couldn’t come home this year, we knew we had to bring their summer home to them.

Internet Island Is Born

We wanted to allow campers to do their favourite activities, learn new ones and feel the magic of CAC, regardless of where they were in the world. We wanted staff to be able to share their energy and passion with campers like they do every summer.

We wanted to take those feelings of disappointment and sadness and turn them into excitement and joy!

Internet Island is run on a weekly basis. Most of the programming we organise can be done independently, in your own time.

We send registered campers a daily email that includes: period of the day, a movement break, a challenge and a bring camp home segment.

Join Us on Zoom!

As well as our daily email, we have 3 live sessions a week as an opportunity to see your camp family.

There are 2 days of Zoom sessions:

# 1 Monday at 7 pm EST (for all age groups)

# 2 Friday at

10 am EST for 5-10 year olds

11 am EST for 11-13 year olds

12 pm EST for 14+ year olds

We also have one Instagram live on Wednesdays (times vary from week to week).

A True Sense of Family

When we are on Adventure Island, it is a place for everyone to disconnect from the pressures of daily life and live in the present without technology.

While technology is an important part of Internet Island, we aimed to find the right balance of online time and having resources available for at-home fun.

We hope Internet Island is bringing some comfort to those who are missing their summer home.

Seeing campers, their families and our staff getting involved and having fun with our activities shows the true sense of family we have within our CAC community.

It has shown us that no matter how big the challenge, when we come together, we will get through it and be stronger on the other side.

Thank you for joining us for a summer of bringing camp home, we can’t wait to see you for the rest of Internet Island!

These amazing benefits of trampolining will have you eager to get started on learning new tricks that you can show off to your friends.

Staying Fit While Having Fun

Trampolining is a low impact form of exercise that is so fun that you don’t even notice that you are getting a workout. As you jump, you strengthen your cardiovascular system, burn calories and build stronger muscles.

Clear Toxins From Your Body

Your body is constantly being bombarded by toxins in the environment. Fortunately, your body has a lymphatic system that is designed to help flush out toxins so that you stay healthier. This system relies upon body movements to help it function properly.

The jumping motions that you do on the trampoline help to open up the valves in your lymphatic system to encourage better lymph flow. While you might not notice the toxins being cleansed from your body, you should feel it in your increased energy level.

Build Strong Bones

The majority of your bone mass is formed during early childhood and adolescence. In fact, most people reach their peak bone mass in their 20s. Starting out with a higher bone mass helps to guard against health conditions such as osteoporosis as you age.

Jumping on a trampoline generates just enough stress on the bones to stimulate them to strengthen.

Feel More Self-Confident

Trampolining can be as simple as you jumping up and down, but it is way more fun when you learn how to do tricks.

During your specialty camp classes, you start with easy tricks such as a tuck jump and seat drop. Then, you get the opportunity to move up to doing more advanced tricks such as a front or backflip.

With each new skill that you learn, you’ll feel your self-confidence rise. This new level of confidence also affects other areas of your life.

You’ll discover that it is much easier to try new things at home, school, and camp when you’ve already conquered your fears on the trampoline.

Generate a Positive Mindset

Every jump that you take helps to trigger the release of endorphins in your brain that flood your body. This makes it virtually impossible to be in a bad mood while you jump, which is why you only see people smiling during their trampoline lessons.

This increased state of happiness can last for hours after you jump, and the positive attitude that you develop carries into your other camp activities.

Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore when you have access to a trampoline, and you’ll love feeling your mind and body grow stronger with every lesson that you take.

Keep in mind that you can also practice your new skills using a mini trampoline or a full-sized one at home so that you can continue to reap the benefits of your new favorite sport all year long.

Channel Your Inner Cirque du Soleil with Silks and Hoops Programs

Cirque du Soleil is world-renowned for their professional acrobatic performances. Each show somehow manages to create a magical world that captivates audiences from beginning to end. The performance troupe was first formed in the 1980s, and it didn’t take long for them to gain worldwide recognition.

Depending upon the performance, you may see performers juggle, dance, and fly through the air on various pieces of equipment. For many young athletes, working on silk and hoop skills paves the way for the ability to perform breathtaking tricks.

Learning the Backstage Secrets

The performers in the troupe are known for doing death-defying stunts that are often shown without a safety harness or net. The decision to do so without safety gear is only made after a performer has undergone years of training and can demonstrate perfect moves every time.

One of the things that you don’t see when the acrobats are flying through the air on stage is the hours of hard work that go into learning their tricks. Long before the performance occurs, aerialists practice learning their routines using state-of-the-art harnesses and trampoline systems to keep them safe.

It is also worth noting that many of the performers are using safety gear. The wires and harnesses are sometimes disguised by costumes and strategic lighting.

Mastering Silk and Hoop Tricks

Every professional performer started out where many of our campers are today. Beginner silks and hoops programs teach the basics of safety along with foundational moves and positions that can transition into more difficult maneuvers.

New aerialists must first learn to master skills such as the various ways for mounting the hoop. Then, students learn simple poses such as the Mermaid and Man in the Moon.

On the silks, aerialists learn special climbs and foot locks in the early stages. They then move on to more complicated wraps and drops.

Developing Troupe-Level Skills

Many hours of practice go into those amazing performances that inspire gasps of awe from the crowds. Cirque du Soleil aerialists often work on silks and hoops that are lifted high off the ground. Their equipment may also raise and lower during their performance, and there may be several people performing at the same time.

Troupe-level skills include those that are done from incredible heights. A Cirque du Soleil performer may also transfer from one hoop to another or perform tricks with a partner. They also use advanced tricks such as neck spins that enthrall the audience.

In one popular show, Corteo, an aerialist performs on an aerial chandelier. This impressive piece of equipment includes a horizontal and vertical hoop. Variations of the chandelier may also have a pole in the middle. This allows for the ultimate level of creative expression during a performance. It also demands a high level of skill since it blends the elements of trapeze, pole fitness, and hoops performances.

Cirque du Soleil is made up of 1300 performers who come from around 55 different countries. According to the Cirque du Soleil website, 35% of their performers come from athletic backgrounds that include sports such as rhythmic gymnastics, trampolining, and tumbling. Others began their career with artistic training in circus performance and dance.

Learning how to perform on silks and hoops could easily be a young acrobat’s first step toward developing a career in the performance arts one day.

Summer Camp Games to Play at Home

Spending so much time at home has a few perks. There’s more time to spend with your family, and you get to lounge around in your favorite pajamas more often. Sleeping late is also great, but you might sometimes find it hard to fill up your time during the day. Boredom is a major problem for many kids right now. Fortunately, that’s an easy fix.

Many of our favorite summer camp games can be played inside. All it takes is a little creativity since you may have to use whatever you happen to have at home. Give these fun games a try the next time you feel bored, and you can bet that the time will fly by.

Start a Balloon Baseball Game

Balloons instantly make any activity feel like a party. Clear out some floor space in a room and make four bases. Then, have each member of your family take turns trying to hit the balloon by using their fist like a bat. If a hit is made, then that player tries to run around the bases while the rest of the group attempts to blow the balloon down to the ground. If they succeed, then that player is out. If not, then the batter scores and gets to go again.

Go On a Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger hunts are one of our favorite things to do at camp. Have the oldest member of the family create a list of items to find in the house. They can be common everyday items or special ones that are planted in hard to find places. Then, make a list and see which member of your group can find all of the items first.

Host a Karaoke Competition

Our camp talent shows are always a hit. Try recreating the experience by having each person in your family come up with a song to perform. Encourage everyone to go all out by dressing up as their favorite pop star or by wearing their silliest outfits. You can then take turns voting on the best one. For even more fun, make videos and invite your friends and extended family members to vote online.

Try Your Hand at Cup Stacking

Those plastic cups that everyone loves having around during the summer are perfect for cup stacking. Grab a set of them and experiment with different patterns. You can also invite your siblings to play with you side by side in a race to see who stacks the cups the fastest.

Freeze a Treasure for a Break the Ice Race

A few coins or trinkets and an ice cube tray are all you need to play this game. Fill the ice cube trays up with water and freeze the small prizes inside. Once they’re frozen, break them out. Each competitor can use straws or water droppers to slowly drip warm water on the ice until they break the prize out. You can let the winner take all or spread the prizes around.

See How Low You Can Go

Limbo is another camp favorite that can easily be set up at home with a simple twist. Instead of using a stick and poles, try using the beam of a flashlight instead. Just turn the lights off in the room and see which member of your family can shimmy their way beneath the lowest beam.

We can’t wait to have our camp family all in the same place again. Until then, have some fun with the extra time that you get to spend with your siblings and parents. Remember that some of the best memories are those unexpected ones that we make happen with our families.
